South Island Half Ironman & Sprint Tri – Ashburton Lake Hood

In Scotts lead up to Taupo Ironman he did the Karapiro Half Ironman last weekend. He did so well, came 6th with the 4th fastest run time. Which is amazing considering he has been injured for so long now and has only been able to run for a short time. It feels like only a month that he’s been able to run properly. So this is exciting with the prospect of him doing well in March at Taupo Ironman NZ and the chance at getting a Kona spot. Holiday in Hawaii for me! Fingers crossed tightly.

Since the Karapiro race went well he decided to sign up for South Island Lake Hood Half Ironman in Ashburton.

First Race of the Season 650m swim / 30km cycle / 7km

There is a sprint triathlon on at the same time so  I thought I may aswell do that race if I’m going to be out there. Its a bit longer than the usual sprint triathlon. I was worried about the water being cold. I’m such a chicken compared to the others, I think I’m definitely at a disadvantage with that. I get worried about the swim start with people swimming on me and all. It happened in this race too. I had someone swimming on my legs. I really must figure out what to do. I guess the answer is swim faster!

I got to use the coaches race wheels as they didn’t fit on Scotts new Quintanaroo TT bike. He needs some break adjustment cable thingy. Had a good bike, and a nice run. I was feeling good on the run, which obviously wasn’t good as when  I finished I checked out my time and I was 1min off what I wanted in the run. Note to self: take stop watch on the run on my next race.

South Island Half Ironman

Scott did really well once again in his race. Although the race started without him realising so he had a few girls in front of him. Also I think he took the first half of the bike a bit easy. And still came 7th! Awesome work. He bet his time from last year by 15mins with a time of 4hours 28 mins.

All in all a great day, although it was pretty freezing out there. It’s always really well run. I’d recommend the race to anyone, possibly just slightly boring as it’s a flat lap course.

Here’s some photos of Scotty, none of me as noone to take the photos since Scott was racing!
